I always Work for Myself

copyright 2007-2008 by Milica Barjaktarovic

I worked for a certain employer, let's call them organization X, as a teacher. I told the students that I expect them to learn a lot and do well, because they are my products and thus will be walking advertisement for the organization X.

The students thanked me for being so caring, and then (naively) asked me why am I so proud of organization X?

The answer is this: maybe I work for organization X today, and that's who I will be trying to promote. However, I ultimately work for myself. My reputation goes everywhere I go, organization X or not. In fact, if I want to get promoted and to have a choice of jobs, I better do the BEST job possible at any time, regardless of who it is paid by. Ultimately, I am building *my* reputation.

So, if organization X pays me, my loyalties are on their side, of course, but if I am a known as a good worker, I have a choice as to where to go and what to do.

So, my responsibility is ultimately to myself first. It is my job to do the best I am capable of, so that I can grow and learn as a person, and also always stay productive and taking care of myself financially and all other ways.

My responsibility is ultimately to the students - because they are on the immediate receiving end of my work, as live human beings whose life I can impact positively or negatively. It is my duty to do the best I am capable of, in order to give students the best I am capable of giving them.

My responsibility is ultimately to the community - the students I train will be "inheriting the world" and they better be trained well... They are the future full-time caretakers of the world.

Also, my responsibilities ultimately are to God (Divine, Dao, White Light, Great Mystery, Great Creator, whatever you call That) and the land. Organization X is ultimately just one venue through which God trains His Children to be fully cognizant, capable, happy human beings, competent to take care of God's Creation.

So, that is my job: to train people to take care of God's Creation, including themselves, and in all that, to take care of me so that I can do that job.
